Here at Out, we've been obsessed with Jonathan Bailey for years, and now People magazine is getting in on the love! Bailey, the star of movies like Wicked, Jurassic World: Rebirth, and the upcoming Wicked: For Good, has made history as the first out gay man to be named People's Sexiest Man Alive!
People has been naming the Sexiest Man Alive for 40 years now, with Mel Gibson winning the first ever title in 1985. Thankfully, we've got a list of every person named Sexiest Man Alive ever! Now, that list is capped off with Bailey.
Why is it important that a gay man be named Sexiest Man Alive? As our writer Moises Mendez II says, "In today's political landscape, it feels like society is slowly backsliding. Conventionally attractive white celebrities are becoming the face of major brands like American Eagle — see: Sydney Sweeney and Travis Kelce — and they are lifted up as the pinnacle of beauty and style, when that's not the case. Queer people, especially queer people of color, have created a culture that gets co-opted by their white counterparts, who then receive all the praise."
Bailey is a significant step forward, but let's keep up the momentum, People! We'd love to see a queer man of color earn the title next year!
