Italy was the last European Union member to legalize same-sex partnerships.
Luca de Sario and Francisco Raffaele Villarusso said "I do" before Roman Mayor Virginia Raggi this weekend--the first same-sex union in both the capital city of Italy and the center of the Roman Catholic church.
The two men returned to Italy from Spain after a law was passed this summer legalizing same-sex unions--but not marriage--in the country.
Italy was the last in the European Union to legalize same-sex partnerships, and legal difficulties remain for same-sex couples--particularly when having or adopting children.
However, de Sario and Villarusso spent the weekend celebrating. Watch the video below of their ceremony.
