Wish Me Away, Chely Wright's documentary chronicling her very public 2010 coming out, opened on Friday to mostly positive reviews. The film covers both Wright's personal emotional struggle and the highly orchestrated coming out/PR campaign. In the mainstream press, the New York Times and the New York Daily News came to similar conclusions about the film: though the fabrication and mechanics of celebrity are somewhat off-putting, the film's best moments focus on Chely Wright the lesbian, not Chely Wright the country star. The A.V. Club agrees, noting that "the movie's heart" lies in Wright's self-shot video diaries.
