RuPaul is taking over the mother-tucking world as she expands the Drag Race universe, but there are also numerous drag performers not attached to the franchise who are ruling the globe when it comes to their social media following.
Whether they work as musicians, actors, comedians, models, or digital influencers, certain drag performers are truly taking this artform into mainstream media and pushing the boundaries for LGBTQ+ content. What's more, these queer artists are becoming legitimate celebrities with as many followers as their straight peers - which used to be unthinkable for out LGBTQ+ artists in the public eye.
Even though fans think that the most famous drag performers in the world all come from the RuPaul's Drag Race series, that's certainly not the case. A third of the most-followed queens on social media reached their fame without the assistance of Mama Ru's franchise, even if some of them are now attached to it or are rumored to join an international edition at some point in the future. In turn, one can't deny the large impact that Drag Race has had in the world, with so many of its former contestants reaching millions of people around the world through social media.
