The 72nd Annual Tonys took place in New York City last night, and focused attention on more than one He Who Must Not Be Named.
Harry Potter & The Cursed Child, the onstage follow-up to J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels, won big, with 6 awards including Best Play and Best Direction of a Play. The Band's Visit, a new musical set in Israel, won the most of the night, with 10 Tonys on their trophy shelf.
Snubs-wise, Mean Girls and Spongebob Squarepants, the two most-nominated productions this year with 12 apiece, fell short--the former, written by Tina Fey, went home completely empty-handed, and the latter only took home one award, for Best Scenic Design in a Musical. Revivals of My Fair Lady and Carousel both took home less than expected as well, losing out on Best Revival of a Musical to the lesser-known Once On This Island.
The ceremony was hosted by Waitress' Sarah Bareilles and Josh Groban, and while there were certainly celebrity moments, the show mostly remained reserved and scandal-free... that is, until Robert De Niro took the stage.
