A Strange Loop Medley

Michael Korte’s newest video is a dose of Black, queer joy.

A Strange Loop, Michael R. Jackson's Tony-winning musical, will be ending its Broadway run this upcoming January.

But, even if you don't get to see A Strange Loop before it closes, Michael Korte has captured something of the musical's essence in his latest video, "A Strange Loop Medley."

A Strange Loop tells the story of Usher, a young, Black, queer musical theater writer, based loosely on Jackson himself. As Usher pens his first musical, he wrestles with his own intrusive thoughts, self-doubts, hopes, and dreams. These are personified by the singing, dancing ensemble.

It is, essentially, a musical about writing a musical about writing a musical. Hence the "Loop" in the title.

Korte, who has nearly 80k YouTube subscribers at the time of writing, is known for his "soul-shaking Broadway mashups and medleys." His other videos include a "Hercules Muses Medley" with all Black, queer singers, and "Elphaba in the Bathroom" with Ciara Renee.

For "A Strange Loop Medley," Korte casts Broadway understudy Kyle Ramar Freeman as Usher.

The ensemble also includes some other impressive names: RuPaul's Drag Race Season 8 winner Bob the Drag Queen, Drag Race Season 14 alum Kornbread, The Voice contestant Elyn, and TikTok influencer Anania Williams.

"Y'all forgot I can sing," tweeted Williams. They certainly can.

The musical arrangement, by Bryson Camper, is snappy and cohesive. Something you could, easily, listen to on loop.
