Taming of the Shrew Goes Trans in Queer Classics Reimagining
A new staging of Shakespeare's classic features two transgender actors in the lead roles.
On June 6, the theater company Queer Classics is debuting a reimagined version of Taming of the Shrew (with a twist) at the Hollywood Fringe Festival.
This production of Shakespeare's play sees protagonists Katherine and Petruchio played by two transgendered actors, Shaan Dasani and Julie Rai Golstein, respectively. The plot is transposed in a 1950s, I Love Lucy-esque comedic world, making their courtship rather controversial, to say the least.
Conceived and directed by Casey Kringlen, the new staging explores gender and sexuality in a different light, complete with a few very steamy, delightfully funny moments.
