As we enter autumn amid ongoing strikes from both actors and writers, the current movie landscape can be a little confusing. Luckily, with all the movies being delayed, we’re here to tell you which of them are still coming out.
We’ve already had some great queer movies released this year, including Theater Campand Bottoms, and now, as we enter Oscar season, we’re expecting several more.
Here are 10 LGBTQ+ movies coming out in the last few months of the year — and when and how you can watch them!
Based on the popular YA novel, this movie follows two Mexican-American teenage boys who find an instant connection when they meet in 1987 El Paso. It premieres in theaters on September 8.
Gael Garcia Bernal stars in this biopic about queer Luchador Saúl Armendáriz, known mostly by his campy on-stage person Cassandro, a flamboyant and entertaining exótico, or wrestler who fights in drag. It also stars Roberta Colindrez and Bad Bunny. Cassandro is being released in limited theaters on September 15 and on Amazon Prime Video on September 22.
Based on the off-Broadway comedy musical F*cking Identical Twins, Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson star as two business rivals who realize they’re identical twin brothers and plan to reunite their divorced parents. It also stars Megan Mullally, Megan Thee Stallion, Bowen Yang, and Nathan Lane. It will be released in select theaters on October 6 before going nationwide on October 20.
This biopic stars Annette Benning as legendary long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad. It also stars Jodie Foster and Rhys Ifans. It will be released in select theaters on October 20 and then on Netflix on November 3.
Colman Domingo stars as the famous Black, gay civil rights leader in this biopic from George C. Wolfe. It shines a light on Bayard Rustin, who helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington. It will be released in select theaters on November 3 and on Netflix on November 17.
Directed and co-written by Taika Waititi, this movie is based on the 2014 documentary of the same name. It follows Dutch-American soccer coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) as he tries to guide the American Samoa national team to qualification in the 2014 World Cup. It features nonbinary actor Kaimana as Jaiyah Saelua, a fa’afafine player, and the first nonbinary and trans woman player to compete in a FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Recently, reviews have said that Jaiyah’s storyline deals with her being misgendered, asked about her genitals, and disrespected. The movie comes out on November 17.
From Oscar-winning Promising Young Woman director Emerald Fennell comes Saltburn, a new thriller set in the mid-2000s about a young college student (Barry Keoghan) who becomes infatuated with a popular and wealthy schoolmate (Jacob Elordi). When the schoolmate invites him to his family estate over the holiday, the student enters a world of eccentricity and depravity. It will be in limited theaters on November 24 and then will be expanding wide on December 1.
This thriller set in 1960s Boston tells the story of a parasitic relationship between two women (Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway) working at a juvenile detention center. It releases in limited theaters on December 1 and wide on December 8.
Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal star in this romantic fantasy about a screenwriter living in London (Scott) who starts a relationship with his mysterious neighbor Harry (Mescal). At the same time, he returns to his childhood home to find his long-dead parents are alive and living at the same age they were when they died. It comes out on December 22.
This big-budget musical is based on the stage musical, which is in turn based on the beloved Alice Walker novel. It features an all-star cast including Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Ciara, Halle Bailey, Aunjanue Ellis, Louis Gossett Jr., and David Allen Grier. It comes out in theaters on December 25.
