These mothers demonstrate that there’s more than one way to be a mom. Some of these moms adopted, some used surrogates, some gave birth. Some are butch, some are femme, some are nonbinary, some are trans women. One thing they have in common is their love and support of their children.
So this Mother’s Day, celebrate some of the queer moms who inspire with the beautiful love they have for their families.
Braunwyn Windham-Burke
The Real Housewives of Orange County star came out as a lesbian in 2020, after being together with Sean Burke for over 20 years. Together, they have seven children. Windham-Burke married her wife, Jennifer Spinner, in 2024.
Brandi Carlile
Eleven-time Grammy-winner Brandi Carlile and her wife, Catherine Shepherd, got married in 2012. Together they have two daughters, Evangeline and Elijah. Carlile's 2018 song "The Mother" is about their first daughter, Evangeline.
Da Brat
Rapper Da Brat came out in 2020 and said "I do" to Jesseca "Judy" Dupart in 2022. The couple welcomed a son, True Legend Harris-Dupart, in 2023.
Kehlani
Singer Kehlani gave birth to a baby girl in 2019. They've had some issues with their ex, Javaughn Young-White, but have said, "I have always taken great care to ensure that my child remains protected and safe at all times. My child and my commitment to motherhood have always been my sole driving forces in this life and will always remain so."
Halsey
Bisexual and nonbinary "Closer" singer Halsey announced the birth of their daughter with screenwriter Alev Aydin in 2021.
Niecy Nash
Emmy-winning actor Niecy Nash has three children with her first ex-husband, Don Nash. In 2020, she came out and married her wife, Jessica Betts.
Stephanie Beatriz
Bisexual Brooklyn 99 and Encanto star Stephanie Beatriz has a daughter with her husband, Brad Hoss.
Ezra Furman
Folk singer Ezra Furman came out as a trans woman when she announced that she was also a mother in 2021.
Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne
Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne met while filming the movie In a World…, and married in 2015. They have twin sons, Max and Finn, conceived via a surrogate.
Keke Palmer
Queer actor, comedian, and host Keke Palmer gave birth to her first child with ex Darius Jackson in 2023.
Miss Major
Miss Major has been a leader in the trans and LGBTQ+ community for over 50 years. She and her partner, Beck, welcomed their first child in 2021.

Linda Perry
Singer/songwriter and mega-producer Linda Perry was in a relationship with actor Sara Gilbert from 2011 to 2019. They had a son together in 2015.
