Debra is messing up.
Debra Messing at the Drama Desk Awards in June 2025.Lev Radin/ShutterstockDebra Messing, considered one of the biggest LGBTQ+ icons for many years due to her performance as the best friend to a gay man (played by a straight guy) on Will & Grace, has been on a "social media crash-out" for months while reacting to the rise of Zohran Mamdani in the polls and his eventual victory in the New York City mayoral election of 2025.
In terms of intensity, the chaotic pictures and videos shared by Messing reached an all-time high during the last few days prior to voting in this election — and social media users are carefully documenting the wild crash-out as it unfolds in real-time across social networks. Thankfully, some of these reactions are also funny, which have helped us digest the shocking things that the Will & Grace star has said on the internet as of late.
All the signs were there — even on Monday, November 3.
On Monday, November 3 — prior to the election results — X user @cee_ryan observed that "Debra Messing has posted 91 Instagram stories in the past 24 hours. Not an exaggeration. I think Zohran has actually broken her brain, although it wasn't in great shape before this mayoral election anyway. Fascinating albeit kinda scary to watch though."
An overall Instagram crash-out, perhaps?
"Debra Messing is about to crash the Instagram app worldwide," Matt Bernstein wrote in an X post.
A Mamdani win, a Messing loss.
The icon @heyjaeee wrote on X, "Oh Debra Messing I hope you are having a horrible night you b*tch!!!!!!"
Live, from New York, it's a Debra Messing meltdown.
"The Debra Messing meltdown is in full swing," Bradley Stern wrote. "An embarrassing loser."
Now that's a twist.
Matt Binder wrote, "Debra Messing is just straight up sharing Donald Trump's own posts now."
One for the theater nerds.
We can always count on Tom Zohar to make quite literally anything about musical theater (and nail it every time).
History matters!
Thankfully, some people are committed to documenting the history of internet culture so we can look back at it.
"I will personally make sure that Debra Messing's Islamophobic crashout on Instagram is written into the history books," Julia Claire wrote.
But even those trying to keep up… Couldn't.
"The way my thread ended abruptly because this woman reached her 100 instagram stories a day limit by 1pm eastern," @barbarismcrit noted.
Either way, this crash-out is one of the books.
When asked to share "favorite meltdowns," @hayejunt replied that this couldn't yet be determined given that we're all still "monitoring the situation with Debra Messing's Instagram" before we're able to report back.
Some folks even want to interact.
@BriL_1995 wrote, "I'm gonna DM this to Debra Messing tonight," and it's a photo of Mamdani holding up the letter L. But will the actress take the L? That's the real question.
A clip of Susan Sarandon resurfaces.
A clip of Susan Sarandon speaking with the late Larry King about Debra Messing has surfaced — and @prasejeebus has been thinking about it a lot these days.
Quite a list to join.
We didn't think she'd join a list as wild as this one shared by Jake Wallinger. But here we are!
A story of volume and silence.
"I feel compelled to report that Debra Messing has not posted a single instagram story since the results were announced," @barbarismcrit wrote.
The Lucille Ball casting saga, revived.
Some wounds take time to heal… As noted by Tom Smyth:
"Debra Messing's about to have an even worse day than she did when Nicole Kidman got cast as Lucille Ball."
Bianca Del Rio has entered the chat.
Is the Debra Messing discourse ready for Bianca Del Rio?
Some people are panicking. Some people are scared. We're making popcorn.
A timeless piece of wisdom by Alyssa Edwards.
"Don't log off. Delete the account," Alyssa Edwards said in 2016 while competing on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars season 2. And, hey… sometimes, that seems like the only advice that we're able to give others, isn't it?
