The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume exhibit of "Superfine" focuses on "Black Dandyism," which guest curator Monica L. Miller, author of the book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, says "poses a challenge to or a transcendence of social and cultural hierarchies" and "asks questions about identity, representation, and mobility in relation to race, class, gender, sexuality, and power."
The gala, with its dress code of "Tailored to You," is a perfect opportunity for Black queer artists to not only celebrate Black excellence throughout history, but also to show off their own Black queer excellence.
Two-time Oscar-nominee Colman Domingo is one of the co-chairs this year, and along with queer host committee members Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Jeremy O. Harris, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Pope, and Sha'Carri Richardson, he is helping to define Black Queer Excellence every day. On this first Monday in May, they all get to be celebrated for it.
Here are some of the celebs who walked the 2025 Met Gala carpet defining what Black Queer Excellence looks like.
