Purpose tour stylist Karla Welch collaborated with Hanes on a classic new capsule.
When Justin Bieber gave stylist Karla Welch the tricky task of creating extra long t-shirts for his Purpose tour, there was nothing like that in the menswear marketplace. Her solution? Stocking up on triple-XL tees from the local Kmart, cutting them apart and personally reconstructing each tee to Bieber's liking. Now, Welch and Bieber's custom uniform is available for everyone through a new Hanes collaboration with her own brand, x Karla.
Available today for $30, Welch's classic seven-piece collection was designed to appeal to broad, gender-neutral audiences. "Everybody needs it," she told Vogue, championing the white tee. "Every culture and subculture has used the white t-shirt. That's where the genius is." She reflected on Hollywood icons like James Dean to create a refined, slim fit--a look she's labeled, "future vintage," that offers smart, contemporary updates on the timeless staple.
The x Karla campaign stars Bieber, Kaia Gerber and Joan Smalls with images shot by Welch's husband, Matthew Welch. "I want[ed] it to be iconic yet accessible," she told Vogue, working with her husband to reference photography from Robert Mapplethorpe and Robert Longo. Together, they created the perfect complement to iconic tees with simple, effortless '90s-inspired imagery. "I just wanted it to feel really clean," she says.
x Karla launched this morning, with a seductive intro video, featuring Bieber removing a Hanes tee to his 2012 single, "Boyfriend." Click here to watch.
