“This is something much bigger than me and a fucking trophy.”

One of the most upsetting things to come out of an already problematic Grammys this year was SZA, the woman with the most nominations of the night, walking away empty handed. When she lost "Best New Artist," the award many thought she had in the bag, to Alessia Cara, the internet erupted in the defense of the Ctrl singer. Now, it's SZA's turn to do some defending.

In a recent interview with GQ, the R&B singer spoke about how she felt about her trophy-less night. "You feel like you're really falling short and you fucking failed [your fans]," she said. But the internet favorite realizes that a Grammy is only a piece of success. "We reached a billion streams on Spotify. The United States fucks with my songs. We're changing little girls' lives across the world, and we didn't know what we were doing when we started," she said. "This is something much bigger than me and a fucking trophy. I'm appreciative of the opportunity. But shit happens."

It took a friend showing her Alessia Cara's Instagram post defending her "Best New Artist" win for SZA to realize how aggressive parts of the internet had been to her fellow nominee. "If anything, I feel compelled to express that I really, really fuck with Alessia Cara. She's beautiful as fuck, her voice is like water, it's like milk, I think it's gorgeous," she said. "It has so much dimension, and she deserves every accolade she gets. And people can't be mad." Read the full GQ interview, here.
