Sapphira Cristál defends 'brilliant' Ginger Minj against critics

The Drag Race alum is opening up on her experience working with the All Stars champion on Hokus Pokus Live!

This might be RuPaul's Best Friends Race after all!

Sapphira Cristál broke records during her time competing on season 16 of Drag Race, and her career has only flourished since coming in second place.

From selling out shows as an opera performer to touring across the country as part of the Hokus Pokus Live! last year, Cristál is the definition of booked and blessed. Created by All Stars 10 champion Ginger Minj, Hokus Pokus Live! had an undeniably sickening run as the hilarious musical — a drag parody of Hocus Pocus — received critical acclaim coast-to-coast.

Following the successful tour, Minj went on a press circuit that received backlash from Drag Race alum as her accounts — such as how she got the call to participate in All Stars, as well as her feelings on the support of her fellow contestants — appeared to contradict one another and caused confusion across the fandom. Despite the fact that queens like Bob the Drag Queen, Daya Betty, Cynthia Lee Fontaine, and others called out Minj for her behavior, Cristál is sticking by her sister and defending her against critics.

" Ginger Minj is a brilliant writer. No one actually cares what you did. Keep me entertained! I'm not going to be one of those people who comes out against Ginger Minj, because she's a brilliant storyteller. She wrote a fabulous show. Sorry! Tell better stories," Cristál tells Out.

Cristál believes all of the outrage surrounding Minj's press tour should be redirected to more important matters, such as the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation that's sweeping the nation.

"I don't go to a drag queen asking her to tell me the truth. I want my president to tell me the truth! I want people in office to tell me the truth. People are trying to keep Ginger Minj more accountable than they're trying to keep our government."

Besides her fervent activism, Cristál is continuing to bring the laughs at a time it's needed most. The talented queen is hitting the road on a solo stand-up comedy tour this spring that she hopes will leave audiences feeling empowered and lighter.

"I love making people laugh," she shares. "You're going to get some really great material. Everything I'm talking about is relatable! We've all been through TSA. Everyone will feel very seen. We need to laugh at this clown in office right now! The more we laugh at this person, the more we realize that this is a problem we can actually deal with."
