The White House has released a statement condemning the attacks.
The Time Warner Center, home to the offices of CNN and other Time Inc.-owned properties in New York City along with the mall at Manhattan's Columbus Circle, have been evacuated this morning following the discovery of a "suspicious package" in the building's mailroom.
Authorities and secret service agents intercepted similar packages addressed to former president Barack Obama and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, CNN reports.
According to a law enforcement official the packages contained "rudimentary but functional" explosive devices similar to ones intended for billionaire investor and Democratic donor George Soros discovered earlier this week.
"There is a strong suspicion" the packages mailed to Obama and Clinton are linked with the one sent to Soros, another law enforcement source told CNN.
"We condemn the attempted violent attacks recently made against President Obama, President Clinton, Secretary Clinton, and other public figures," said White House press secretary Sarah Sanders in a statement. "These terrorizing acts are despicable, and anyone responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. The United States Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies are investigating and will take appropriate actions to protect anyone threatened by these cowards."
