Picnic-Perfect Manhattan
The Perfect Manhattan is just a touch drier than a standard Manhattan, and this version is served over ice. Don't worry; clear plastic wine or highball glasses will do--but definitely scuttle
the Solo cups.
12 oz. rye whiskey
3 oz. sweet vermouth
3 oz. dry vermouth
12 dashes bitters
(Angostura or orange)
Maraschino cherries
Combine the first four ingredients and store them in a freezer until you're ready to depart for your picnic. Serve over ice with cherries. Makes 6 servings.
Summer Shandy
The ingredients seem unlikely bedfellows, but withhold judgment until you've tasted this. (A radler, a traditional German alternative, is made with one bottle of lager plus one bottle of good lemon soda, for two drinks. It is surprisingly good too, but significantly less boozy.)
24 oz. lager or Pilsner beer
4 oz. vodka
4 cups water
1 can frozen pink lemonade concentrate
1 lemon
Mix vodka, water, and lemonade concentrate in a large pitcher. Slowly pour the beer along the inside of the pitcher so as not to create a foamy head. Serve over ice and garnish with lemon slices. Makes 4 servings.
