Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia is fashion's greatest comedian, rolling out styles that double as tongue-in-cheek cultural critiques. From his iconic Bernie Sanders endorsement to that assless Levi's collaboration, Gvasalia is an expert at igniting the clickbait generation.
His latest venture is a blue tote bag, priced at $2,145, that looks exactly like the one IKEA sells, only in "blue wrinkled, glazed leather." Where IKEA's version features a polypropelene "FRAKTA" holdall, Balenciaga's Italian-made recreation boasts leather handles and straps, as well as a gold-stamped logo and keyring lanyard--luxury.
So if you're a proud member of 1% and can, for example, frequently purchase Diptyque candles instead of Yankee, perhaps you'll enjoy buying into Balenciaga's latest. But if you're like the rest of us, who consider luxury spending more than $1 on a single slice of pizza, you can get the designer look for less by spending literally $0.99 on IKEA's website. Chances are you'll look like an idiot, but at least the option is there.
