Biggest LGBTQ+ snubs at the 2025 Tony Awards
From princes to pirates, from Redwood to Romeo!

Bruce Glikas/WireImage; Joan Marcus; Bruce Glikas/Getty ImagesNominations for the 78th Tony Awards have plenty of queer representation for theater fans to celebrate — from Oh, Mary! to Death Becomes Her to Just in Time to Smash to The Picture of Dorian Gray. And yet, there's only so much room for so many fabulous productions and performances to be included, which means that some of our fan-favorites don't make the cut.
It's also noteworthy that 2025 is an incredibly competitive year for the Tonys. Between musical theater titans and huge Hollywood stars who have found themselves on Broadway, this is an incredibly exciting year to be a part of this community and get nominated for a Tony Award.
Unfortunately, some of our LGBTQ+ favorites didn't land a nomination… But we can still shout them out and celebrate their work! From princes to pirates, from Redwood to Romeo, the queer nominations listed below do deserve some recognition.
Keep scrolling to learn more about the LGBTQ+ nominations that were snubbed the 78th Tony Awards — airing Sunday, June 8 on CBS and Paramount+.
Jim Parsons ('Our Time')

Though many fans might not realize it, Jim Parsons had already been doing plenty of theater work in the 1990s and early 2000s — way before he broke out as the iconic Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory.
In 2024, Parsons played the Stage Manager in Kenny Leon's Broadway revival of Our Time. After the success of Mother Play — which resulted in Parsons' first-ever Tony nomination — we hoped that the momentum would continue in this new production.
Regrettably, Parsons did not earn a nomination for Our Town.
Jinkx Monsoon ('Pirates! The Penzance Musical')

After her critically acclaimed performances and box office-breaking runs in Chicago and Little Shop of Horrors, Jinkx Monsoon was cast as the character of Ruth in the Roundabout Theatre Company revival of Pirates! The Penzance Musical.
Unlike her aforementioned roles, Monsoon originated this new version of Ruth in the 2025 revival of Pirates!, which meant that she was eligible for a Tony nomination. It's unfortunate that the trans actress and two-time Drag Race winner didn't receive this well-deserved Tony nomination, but her Broadway journey is just getting started and we can't wait to see what's next.
Michael Urie ('Once Upon a Mattress')

The 2024 revival of Once Upon a Mattress featured Michael Urie originating the role of Prince Dauntless alongside Sutton Foster as Princess Winnifred. The production received solid reviews, but a nomination didn't come through for our dear Prince Urie.
David Hyde Pierce ('Pirates! The Penzance Musical')

The legendary David Hyde Pierce originated Major General Stanley / W. S. Gilbert in the reboot of Pirates! A Penzance Musical, bringing his signature sense of humor to the overall story and this particular performance.
Given that he's won Tony Awards in the past, and also got nominated for his work in productions like Hello, Dolly! and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, we were definitely rooting for another Tony moment for Pierce.
Idina Menzel ('Redwood')

Idina Menzel was nominated for three Tony Awards in three different decades: Rent in 1996, Wicked in 2004, and If/Then in 2014. Notably, Menzel's voice-acting role as Elsa in Disney's Frozen was also highly regarded for adding such an iconic new character to the pantheon of Disney Princesses.
In 2024 — and through 2025 — Menzel starred as the main character of Redwood, a new musical by Kate Diaz and Tina Landau. That character, Jesse, was a queer woman navigating her experiences with grief, and many believed that it could've been the next big success in Menzel's career.
Unfortunately, one day after the 2025 Tony Award nominations were revealed and no accolade was receiveNicholas Barasch ('Pirates! The Penzance Musical')

Nicholas Barasch, who originated the role of Frederic, was another queer performer in 2025's Pirates! The Penzance Musical that fans hoped could've scored a Tony Award nomination.
Thankfully, Pirates! The Penzance Musical did get nominated for Best Revival of a Musical. Just like Monsoon and Pierce, however, Barasch also didn't earn a nomination for his performance in the show.
Kit Connor ('Romeo + Juliet')

Heartstopper heartthrob and Warfare badass Kit Connor played one of the titular characters in the greatest love story of all time. Overall, Romeo + Juliet was indeed nominated for Best Revival of a Play.
Alas, Connor himself wasn't nominated for playing this modern-day version of Romeo in the Sam Gold-directed musical featuring music by Jack Antonoff.
