David Hawe, 44, and John Paul Kane, 42, were married September 29 in Toronto, Canada, in an unusual outdoor ceremony with 100 of their closest friends witnessing their union as comedian and actor Drew Droege officiating as his character Chloe Sevigny (watch the video here). "[Chloe's] comedic genius kept us laughing instead of crying, like we had feared," says Hawe.
Kane and Hawe had a chance encounter 10 years ago they "met briefly one night in a club through some friends, and then never saw each other again." Then, during the opening night for a show Hawe was having in a Queen West gallery, "John walked past the window," Hawe explains. "There was a snowstorm, and he was all I could see outside. And I couldn't get him outta my head after that."
Hawe says he spent weeks tracking down the elusive "Scottish bear," and they've been together for the past seven years.
The self-proclaimed "husbears" got married in a secret garden behind one of their favorite Toronto restaurants, Sugo Trattoria, on Church Street. The space was decorated silver and white with 28 pink chandeliers. They wore rented tuxedos and "felt truly fancy."
The reception and party included three DJs spinning and "amazing performances by some of our favorite local entertainers. "We sang, danced, and drank under the stars," says Hawe. "It couldn't have been a more special time."
