Watch What Happens When a Gay Man Proposes in His Methodist Church in Austin

trevor harper

When Trevor Harper decided to surprise his boyfriend with a marriage proposal, he knew just where he wanted to do it. In front of the alter at the First United Methodist Church of Austin, he got down on one knee and the congregation went nuts.

Watch the video Harper posted to YouTube and get out your Kleenex. You're going to need them.

From the clip's description on YouTube:

We were asked to share our faith story in front of our congregation at First United Methodist Church of Austin. This is a church that has welcomed us and changed our lives. All are welcome, no exceptions.

As members of this incredible church family we have grown as Christians, individuals, and as a couple. After 9 years together, I couldn’t think of a better way to ask him to be my husband. Your sexuality does not define your right to live a spiritual, Christ-filled life. We are instructed to love and it is that simple. We are blessed beyond our wildest imagination.

The United Methodist Church, by the way, does not support same-sex marriage, but many members are lobbying the denomination to change its position. The Austin church is affiliated with the Reconciling Ministries Network, a group of United Methodist congregations that support LGBT equality.
