Bec Sandridge Sounds Off On Heteronormativity in 'I'll Never Want a BF'

"The song title says it all," admits Bec Sandridge, whose gritty, guitar-driven track "I'll Never Want a BF" is a queer declaration to people who've questioned her sexuality or blindly steered her towards heterosexual relationships. "My mum gave my number to a grandfather to give to his grandson although I had a girlfriend. It was pretty delegitimizing, and I was pretty darn angry."

Despite the Australian artist reflecting on her own experience through "I'll Never Want a BF," she wrote it to be a relatable anthem rejecting social pressures to be in relationships altogether. "I think it speaks on a universal level about being single and how there's this ingrained idea that people are better off when they have a partner," Sandridge says.

The Geoff O'Connor-directed music video is an extension of these ideas, featuring Sandridge peering through binoculars in a stark, grey space. Two older women, who're standing center stage, kiss passionately, completely unfazed by the singer's presence. "I'll never want a boyfriend, just cause you want me to," Sandridge sings with a fluttering, theatrical tenor. "Just cause you think I do, just like you."
