Madison Bailey is speaking up!
After reaching mainstream success thanks to the popularity of the hit Netflix series Outer Banks, the pansexual actress is ready to embrace her next chapter.
Bailey wants to focus on queer roles as she books her next big Hollywood gig, but she secretly wishes her Outer Banks character, Kiara, would have come out at some point throughout the series. However, the star proudly embraces her queer identity in her personal life and serves as an inspiration to fans around the world.
"It's never too late! It's literally never too late. Especially with the lack of queer representation on this show, I'm really happy that people can still connect to it via me in real life. I can represent off-screen," Bailey tells Out.
Although there are no queer storylines depicted in the entire run of Outer Banks, the important messages of chosen family and friendship have deeply resonated with gay fans.
"There's definitely themes that are relatable, especially with the found family and choosing your community. Your community has and will always have your back through every hardship that we face. Just remember that your community will always protect you and we will always ride for each other."
Bailey knows how important it is to use her platform as a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community. As queer representation continues to decline in Hollywood, the actress is clapping back at critics who oppose more diversity on screen.
"Find some joy in your life! I can only assume it comes from a place of bitterness. To see people loud and happy... it's internal. Find anything that makes you happy. Find something, damn! Leave us alone!"
Thankfully, Bailey is putting in the work to make sure gay storylines are still at the forefront. The talented star hasn't portrayed a strong queer character on screen just yet, but that might potentially change in the near future.
"Can I tease that [a queer role] might be coming to life right now in real time? It's on the way! I've been manifesting it. I've wanted to represent on screen for a long time and I think I might have an opportunity to do so. I don't want a dark sad story. I want happy. I want joy. We need to put the community on screen!"
The final season of Outer Banks is streaming now on Netflix. To see the full interview with Madison Bailey, check out the video at the top of the page.
