There are two celebrity names most people probably thought would never be found in the same sentence: Marc Jacobs and Luigi Mangione.
The openly gay fashion designer made some surprising comments about the accused murder on a recent episode of Vanity Fair’s Lie Detector Test.
The episode opens with Jacobs being asked if he would style Mangione when he goes on trial for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. His answer? “Um. Yes.”
This may seem like an unusual question, but Jacobs has a history of dressing celebrities accused of crimes. Actress Winona Ryder wore a Marc Jacobs dress at her shoplifting trial, rapper Lil’ Kim donned his fur-trimmed coats during her trial, and Hole frontwoman Courtney Love sported a Marc Jacobs pink cocktail dress at her drug-possession trial.
Jacobs passed the lie detector test when he said he would dress Mangione, but admitted that the 28-year-old who is facing federal and state charges doesn’t really need his help.
“I think he looks pretty good the way he dresses, actually,” Jacobs said.
Mangione has been making headlines this week after he pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges and his New York State murder trial was postponed. He first went viral when he was arrested for the CEO’s murder, both because of his surprisingly good looks and because the public is fed up with the rising cost of healthcare in America and healthcare companies routinely denying coverage.
Jacobs also agreed that Mangione is a “trendsetter” because Nordstrom sold out of burgundy sweaters after photos of Mangione wearing one to court went viral.
The 63-year-old designer is well aware of his reputation for being the stylist to stars accused of crimes. In fact, earlier this year he joked, “Go to Marc Jacobs for your trial outfits,” in his A24 documentary, Marc by Sofia.
Jacobs may be willing to dress Mangione for his trial, but after pleading out in his federal case and his lawyers attempting to get his state charges thrown out on the grounds of double jeopardy, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see the accused criminal wearing Marc Jacobs.
