Grey's Anatomy has a long history of queer doctors. Recently, the iconic Lena Waithe joined the hit ABC series as a new cast member — and fans couldn't be more excited!
Waithe's character, Dr. Evynn Moore, has been described as a very intelligent doctor who was once a student of Catherine Fox's (Debbie Allen). As we celebrate this milestone, it's the perfect time to look back at the series' history of queer characters and storylines.

Dr. Callie Torres

One of the most famous queer characters in Grey's Anatomy history is the bisexual Dr. Callie Torres, played by nonbinary actor Sara Ramirez. Dr. Torres was on the show for eleven seasons and 239 episodes over ten years. Callie was in several relationships throughout her years on the show, including with fellow doctors George O'Malley (played by out actor T.R. Knight), Mark Sloan, Erica Hahn, and Arizona Robbins, with whom she was married and has a child.
Dr. Amelia Shepherd

Played by Caterina Scorsone for several seasons of the spinoff show Private Practice, as well as more than ten seasons of Grey's Anatomy, starting in season 7. She is the sister of Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey).
Dr. Leah Murphy

Introduced in season 9, Dr. Leah Murphy was featured on Grey's Anatomy for two seasons, and then returned for a new run in season 13. Murphy, a surgical resident, was brought to life by actress Tessa Ferrer.
Dr. Arizona Robbins

Jessica Capshaw played Dr. Arizona Robbins, a surgeon introduced in the fifth season of the show, and appearing in ten seasons. She had several relationships with other women on the show, including a long-term relationship with Dr. Callie Torres.
Dr. Teddy Altman

Sharing a name with queer Young Avengers character Hulkling, Dr. Teddy Altman was played by Kim Raver. She was revealed to be bisexual when viewers found out she had a romantic relationship with her best friend who died on 9/11.
Dr. Levi Schmitt

ABC
Jake Borelli played this popular character who was on the show from season 16 to season 21. He was the first gay male series regular on the show and had a relationship with surgeon Dr. Nico Kim. The character's journey helped Borelli come out in real life.
Dr. Carina DeLuca

Originally appearing in season 19 of Grey's Anatomy as a doctor that specialized in female sex and orgasms, this character played by Stefania Spampinato moved on to the spin-off show Station 19, where she is now married to Maya Bishop. They have three children together.
Dr. Nico Kim

This surgeon played by Alex Landi dated fellow gay doctor Levi Schmitt for a while before breaking up and leaving the hospital. He later introduced Levi to his partner Jason Shaheen, with whom he was having a child through a surrogate.
Dr. Mika Yasuda

Midori Francis played this character introduced as an intern in season 19 and leaving after season 21. While on the show, she had relationships with fellow intern Jules Millin and Dr. Taryn Helm.
Dr. Monica Beltran

Played by queer actor Natalie Morales, Dr. Beltran appeared in nine episodes during seasons 20 and 21.
Dr. Casey Parker

Casey Parker is the first transgender doctor to appear on Grey's Anatomy, played by actor Alex Blue Davis. He was on the show for seasons 14-16, and has appeared on one season of Station 19.
Dr. Penelope Blake

Samantha Sloyan joined Grey's in season 11 as one of the doctors who was treating Derek Shepherd when he died. Later, she moved to Grey Sloan Memorial where she had a relationship with Dr. Callie Torres.
Dr. Eliza Minnick

In season 13, Eliza Minnick (Marika Dominczyk) joined the hospital as a new surgical consultant. She had a relationship with Dr. Arizona Robbins before she was fired.
Dr. Erica Hahn

Appearing in 25 episodes throughout seasons 2-5 of the show played by Brooke Smith, Dr. Erica Hahn was a surgeon who had a romance with Callie Torres.
Dr. Cass Beckman

Sophia Bush joined Grey's Anatomy in season 21 as Dr. Cass Beckham. While she's married to a man, the couple has an open relationship through which viewers learn that Cass identifies as queer.
Dr. Jules Millin

Played by out actor Adelaide Kane, Dr. Jules Millin joined the show in season 19 as a new intern and has been on ever since. She's bisexual and has had relationships with both men and women on the show.
Dr. Kai Bartley

Nonbinary actor E.R. Fightmaster played this nonbinary doctor, the first on Grey's Anatomy, for 16 episodes in seasons 18 and 19 of the show. They had a relationship with Dr. Amelia Shepherd.

Surgical resident Dr. Taryn Helm is played by Jaicy Elliot and joined the show in season 14 and has been on ever since. She's also appeared on Station 19.
Chaplain James Morgan

Micahel Thomas Grant joined Grey's Anatomy as the new hospital chaplain. His former husband, Ryan, died and then he started dating Levi Schmitt, and moved to Texas with him.
Dr. Lauren Boswell
