Janelle Monáe is not holding back when it comes to criticism of musicians who have performed for President Donald Trump's second term in the White House.
The 10-time Grammy Award nominee performed at an afterparty related to the Quincy Jones tribute that had taken place earlier that evening. Upon identifying that Nelly was attending the event, Monáe called out the rapper for his participation in Trump's inauguration celebrations.
Freestyling over Nelly's song "Hot in Herre" alongside Anderson .Paak, Monáe rapped:
"F*ck you Nelly! I used to like Nelly, but then he went to perform for Donald Trump, f*ck that [n-word], I don't give a f*ck… Ain't nobody gonna hate on us and I'mma look back like I don't give a f*ck."
"I care about women. I care about Hispanics. I care about Spanish people. I care about Mexicans. I care about gay people," Monáe continued. "Nelly, you sold out. I used to think you was cool, but now you look like a motherf*cking fool. I don't care what you really saying. I might be a little tipsy, but I know everything I'm motherf*cking saying. If you think I'm rude, f*ck you [n-word]. Get a new attitude!"
Nelly performed at Trump's recent Liberty Ball and, when criticized, defended his decision to take on that gig.
"I respect the office. This isn’t politics. Politics for me is over; [Trump] won, he's the Commander-in-Chief," Nelly argued, as reported by
Rolling Stone. "I love this country as well. It is an honor for me to perform for the President of the United States, regardless of who is in office."
