The film, which is being produced by Plan B and distributed by Mubi, centers around a slasher franchise called Camp Miasma, which is being rebooted once again. "But when the latest movie's director becomes obsessed with the mysterious, reclusive actress who played the 'final girl' in the original film, a whole new kind of slasher emerges from the bottom of the lake," Variety says.
"I make movies I wish existed when I was a kid," Schoenbrun said, as noted in the report. "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is my best attempt at the 'sleepover classic': An insane yet cozy midnight odyssey that beckons to unsuspecting viewers from the horror section at the local video store."
The director added, "I couldn't be more excited to be heading to sleep-away camp this summer with the mad comic genius Hannah Einbinder, the legendary Gillian Anderson, and the daring folks at Mubi and Plan B, who by greenlighting this movie have summoned a plague-like flood of blood, guts, and various other fluids to rain down on us all."
Schoenbrun had a breakout year in 2024 with the horror film I Saw the TV Glow, which earned six nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards, three at the Gotham Awards, and nine at the Dorian Awards, among many others.
Einbinder is currently starring in the comedy Hacks, in which she plays the bisexual head writer of a late-night show. For her role, she's been nominated for three Emmys and three Golden Globes.
