Ava DuVernay, Mindy Kaling, Bretman Rock talk allyship at the Oscars
The stars were out on Hollywood Biggest's Night!
The 97th Academy Awards took place on Sunday and featured plenty of LGBTQ+ representation among the nominees, performers, and attendees walking the red carpet.
Out caught up with a few of them on the red carpet!
Bretman Rock

“I feel like people who are allies think that being an ally just means they are cool with the gays, but you really have to show up and show out for us,” Bretman Rock said.
“You have to say how you mean it, tip your drag queens, talk to your queer friends all the time, and come to the parades. Don’t just say it, be about it.”
Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling offered an empowering reminder to queer individuals: “Believe in yourself, make your own work, and kind of ignore all of the haters.”
Ava DuVernay

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay emphasized the role of allies, stating that true support means to “listen and follow directions.” Her words serve as a reminder that allyship is not about centering oneself, but about actively supporting and uplifting those who need it most.
Julianne Hough

“This is a Dior dress, and I wanted to feel glamorous for the occasion,” Julianne Hough told Out. She also revealed the inspiration behind her chic, short hairstyle:
“Zendaya was my hair inspiration because short hair can either feel like I’m going to the White House or the Oscars, and this just feels very chic and cool.”
Diane Warren

“It would be amazing — especially winning for the record I’m nominated for, 'The Journey,'” Diane Warren said, reflecting on her decades-long history with the Academy, which began with her first nomination in 1988. “It’s all in how we manifest and put in the work.”
