Hari Nef Joins Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie ‘Barbie’ Film

Hari Nef

You can’t have a Barbie movie without one of The Dolls!

Greta Gerwig's upcoming Barbie movie keeps sounding better and better. The latest piece of news to spark our attention is the casting of trans actress and model Hari Nef.

Hari Nef (And Just Like That..., Transparent) is joining the cast of Barbie in a so-far unnamed role. She'll join Margot Robbie as Barbie, Ryan Gosling as Ken, and a stellar cast that also includes America Ferrara, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, and Simu Liu.

Nef celebrated the news on her Instagram, captioning her post "The Dolls are Dolling."

The Barbie movie, being released by Warner Bros., is written by Gerwig (Little Women) and her partner Noah Baumbach. Gerwig will also be directing.

We don't know if any of the LGBTQ+ actors in the film (McKinnon, Shipp, and Nef) will play queer or trans characters, but with a cast this full of queer talent, it's bound to be a good movie either way.

Recently, Nef has appeared in the TV shows And Just Like That..., and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. This will be her first role in a feature length film since 2018's Assassination Nation, a dark comedy about social media and town secrets.

Her other upcoming projects include ABC's revival of LA Law, the drama Who Am I? And the upcoming esports comedy 1Up. Nef is starring in 1Up alongside Ruby Rose, who replaced Elliot Page in the starring role.

The movie follows a young woman who "quits her college esports team, fed up with gaslighting from her male counterparts, and quickly realizes that her decision comes at the cost of her scholarship. But, she discovers a loophole to save her collegiate future: if she can find a coach and assemble a whole new varsity-caliber team capable of reaching the State Finals. Valerie turns to her professor, Parker Nesby (Rose), and together with Valerie's best friend and fellow gamer Sloane (Nef), they form and train a rag-tag women's team committed to taking down the boys that tried to shut them out of gaming in the first place."
