Though trans people have been around since the beginning of human civilization, we are just now beginning to appreciate the crucial role they play in the LGBT community. Including those who are genderqueer, agender, nonbinary, or fluid, this population has come into the spotlight in recent years, making major appearances in film, TV, and sports. Trans celebrities such as actress Laverne Cox and journalist Janet Mock have brought trans identity into the spotlight, while trans writers like Leslie Feinburg have shown the world that those who live their true gender identity are here and proud. And with more public facilities for transgender people as well as an increasing emphasis on ensuring them their legal and social protections, the world is acknowledging that trans people are here to stay.
