Billy Eichner Reveals Theater Chain Tried to Pull Bros Trailer For Being Too Gay

The critically-acclaimed gay rom-com went through a lot.

Censorship of LGBTQ+ content in 2022. But are we surprised?

Bros is officially a critically-acclaimed rom-com that has audiences and critics raving. Alas, a lot of behind-the-scenes drama took place to get Bros out in theaters - and even its trailer wasn't safe from censorship and scrutiny.

Billy Eichner wrote in a tweet:

"Rolling Stone already has BROS on the list of the best comedies of the 21st century. What's also true is that at one point a theater chain called Universal and said they were pulling the trailer because of the gay content. (Uni convinced them not to). America, f*ck yeah, etc etc."

Eichner didn't reveal which theater chain tried to censor the Bros trailer, but it is implied that this could be a major chain in the US. The fact that Universal Pictures - the studio behind the film - had to intervene is also quite jarring.

Bros has unfortunately underperformed at the box office. With very few exceptions, it is noteworthy that the month of September is historically quite bad for movies to open in theaters. Particularly in recent years, successful September movies have mostly been horror films like It, The Nun, Insidious: Chapter 2, and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, to name a few.

The silver lining is that viewers and critics are loving Bros, even if not as many people are going out to see the film as the LGBTQ+ community had hoped for.

Bros is currently in theaters.
