We've known for a month or so that a sequel to Netflix's hit fantasy action film The Old Guard will be getting a sequel, and now we know who will be helming it!
Unfortunately, Gina Prince-Bythewood won't be back to direct the sequel, but she's giving the movie about immortal warriors to another talented female director. Victoria Mahoney, who was the second unit director on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has stepped in to direct the second installment of The Old Guard film franchise.
"Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill, and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard," Mahoney said. "I must've watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement-being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses. Ever eager to continue pushing the genre for action-loving audiences."
Prince-Blythewood is also excited to hand the reins over. "I love The Old Guard and the story and characters I was honored to put into the world," she said in a statement. "It was exciting to disrupt the genre. I have decided not to direct the sequel, but will stay on as a producer. I leave our franchise in good hands as my girl Vic Mahoney takes on this next chapter."
We don't currently know what the plot of the sequel will be, but we do know that our favorite immortal gay couple, Yusuf and Nicky, played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli, will definitely be back.
When Theron first spilled the beans about the sequel, she also confirmed that Yusuf and Nicky would be coming back. "Oh yeah! They're definitely there," she said when asked if the characters would make a return in the sequel.
Theron, Kenzari, and Marinelli are set to return, as well as other cast members KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
