If there's one thing we always want more of, it's immortal gay lovers.
Charlize Theron told Variety this week that the sequel for the much-loved Netflix action film The Old Guard is already written! In an exclusive to the website, Theron said that writing the script for the sequel has been completed and that filming will begin early next year in 2022! We can't wait!
And that's not all she confirmed, though! When asked if Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli's characters, Yusuf and Nicky, a gay couple, will be back, she enthusiastically replied, "Oh yeah! They're definitely there." Yes! More immortal gay lovers, PLEASE.
In the first film, Theron plays the leader of a group of immortals who have fought to protect mankind for hundreds of years. Two of the members of her team are Yusuf, who was a Muslim warrior in the Crusades, and Nicky, who was a Catholic Italian soldier in the same Crusades. The two have been lovers and partners for centuries, and nothing can tear them apart.
Of course, Yusuf and Nicky were one of our favorite parts of the first movie, and we can't wait to see what they do in the follow-up. Nothing right now is known about the plot, but the first film left a lot to be explored, so whatever happens, you can be sure it will be packed with action, stunts, and a bunch of sexy immortal warriors.
The Old Guard is based on a comic book by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez and was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The film also starred KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Harry Melling, Van Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film - Wide Release but lost to Clea DuVall's Christmas romcom Happiest Season.
