You might know JD Samson from her spot on the most recent Out 100, or you might know her for her work with Le Tigre, or perhaps even for her most recent project, MEN. Now, thanks to some confusion on the Internet with that other New York band, The Men, Samson's band has rebranded itself JD Samson + MEN. The first release under the moniker is the Next EP.
The EP features three songs -- "Next," "Make Him Pay," and "I Don't Care"--but Samson tells Out that she's most proud of the hypnotic dance remix of "Make Him Pay," which she loves for its "pop" flavor and dance vibe. Incidentally, she co-produced it with JK (nee Jonathan Kreinik), a
soundsmith with whom Samson shared a bunkbed back in her Le Tigre days. In addition to working with Samson, JK has also lent his talents to The Rapture and Trans Am.
"Make Him Pay" certainly is a gem of a remix: With multiple soundscapes and a persistent, pounding beat, it immediately draws you in and keeps you there. Although the remix doesn't feature much of the original lyrics, Samson compares the original to the angry protests of the Occupy movement. Take a listen to the song, debuting exclusively on Out.com, below.
