"To play being in love or falling in love with someone, it's the best," Scott said.

All of Us Strangers stars Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal have been nearly inseparable this fall, and the bond began while they were filming the movie in which they play lovers.

The two actors only knew each other “a little bit” before filming, but “not as well as we know each other now. We know everything, the whole kit and caboodle!” Scott joked to Entertainment Weekly, alluding to the sex scene the men filmed together.

Scott and Mescal also said that their shared Irish heritage helped them to get closer on set and understand what their director was going for.

“The means to express is something that we as a culture are still processing,” Mescal said. “I think that's why Irish actors, generally speaking, are good at playing the stuff beneath the surface. A good healthy dose of repression helps the ol' acting.”

Still, for Scott, the experience was nothing but good.

“To play being in love or falling in love with someone, it's the best, completely wonderful thing to be able to do,” he said. “We were starting to get to know each other [as people], as well. Beyond our preliminary friendship, it was like both of those experiences were coexisting.”

It seems that friendship is a bond that will be hard to break.

Director and writer Andrew Haigh added that the way he filmed the sex scene in the movie was related to broader themes of intimacy he wanted to express. Those themes were made stronger by the two actors’ connection.

“I wanted to express the feeling of connection and how you feel when you are with someone,” he said. “It's about where you're looking. It's about being vulnerable and then allowing yourself to feel a bit freer and then tense up and be nervous and awkward and then let the sexuality of it override you. It's all of those things. Sex is complicated, whether it's the first time with someone or whether it's in a long term relationship.”
