Though Taylor Swift and Janet Mock have already been announced as honorees FOR this year's GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, the organization still has more news in store. Today GLAAD announced that Ryan Murphy would be honored at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York.
Murphy, who is a prolific, multi-award winning show runner will be presented with the Vito Russo Award, Previously given to the likes of Ricky martin, RuPaul, Billy Porter, Anderson Cooper, Cynthia Nixon and more, the honor is meant to recognized openly LGBTQ+ media professionals who have made a significant difference in accelerating queer and trans acceptance. Murphy's work in shows like Glee and Pose do this blatantly, but it's also present in a litany of his other projects.
Murphy signed a multi-million dollar deal with Netflix and has multiple projects in the works as a part of that now. Some of those projects, including The Prom and Boys In the Band, which both deal with LGBTQ+ lead characters, will debut this year.
"Ryan Murphy is a talented trailblazer behind some of the most innovative and popular LGBTQ projects in television, theater and film history, and he continues to bring underrepresented LGBTQ voices to the table in ways that raise the bar in Hollywood,"GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. "Ryan's unique and gifted brand of storytelling has not only entertained the masses, but provided LGBTQ youth with characters who inspire them to live boldly and proudly. "
