The View Hosts Go Purple For LGBTQ Spirit Day
"Purple, purple, purple," cheered Whoopi Goldberg on Thursday's airing of The View. Goldberg, along with co-hosts Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, and View newcomer, Meghan McCain, wore purple today to celebrate GLAAD's annual Spirit Day.
"We are all wearing purple, today, to honor GLAAD Spirit Day," Goldberg said. "Joining forces with the millions taking a stand to stop the bullying against the LGBTQ community faces on a daily basis. We are proud to stand with you."
GLAAD, or Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, has spearheaded the purple-filled Spirit Day since 2010, which has become one of the largest demonstrations of support for LGBTQ youth.

The organization founded Spirit Day as "a means of speaking out against LGBTQ bullying and standing with LGBTQ youth, who disproportionately face bullying and harassment because of their identities."
By "going purple," many major companies, celebrities, and political leaders--from Logo to CNN and Britney Spears to the United Nations--are showing not just the country's but the world's queer youth relentless support and solidarity.
The View's choice to participate this morning came as no surprise, as the ladies of the show have celebrated Spirit Day for a number of years. What did come as a surprise, though, was the support from newly appointed conservative commentator, Meghan McCain. The daughter of Republican Senator and former presidential nominee John McCain, Meghan proudly joined her co-hosts in "going purple" for the day.
Not all of the right was on board, however. For the first time since 2011, the White House did not participate in the annual festivities. Despite their predicted absence, GLAAD reports that this year's turnout included "more celebrities, landmarks, athletes, brands, media outlets, elected officials, and LGBTQ youth as participants than ever before."
Purple, purple, purple indeed!
