Ballroom is a world in and of itself. It's populated by houses, and micro economies that provide places of refuge, an opportunity to network, as well as teams on which to compete at balls. Success on the ballroom floor can turn you into a verified notable: become known for the category of face and you are essentially this community's pop star-like celebrity. Make your name in the runway category and have your peers view you as their very own Naomi Campbell. But there's a particular category that may not get as much attention outside of the community, but within ballroom it is where competitors put the idea of a "pin-up model" in motion: Welcome to sex siren.
While competitors for the sex siren category are normally pretty much all around beautiful, they most importantly have a confidence about them. They ooze sex appeal on the runway. And, if the judges like what they see, they can take home a trophy and possibly some cash at the end of the night.
Saturday, at the House of Miyake-Mugler's ball, the house hosted an open-to-all sex siren category -- meaning that both women and men could compete -- sponsored by the dating app Chappy. With $1,000 on the line, things certainly got more than a little hot.
