October marks LGBTQ+ History Month, a time to celebrate the people who paved the way for the freedoms and visibility we have today, while taking a closer look at the stories, struggles, and everyday lives that make up queer history.
Today, we’re looking back at the trailblazers who helped build the LGBTQ+ rights movement, including 14 elders whose activism and courage helped shape the fight for equality. We’re also exploring a mysterious set of 1957 photographs that appear to document a gay wedding, vintage Pride photos capturing queer communities in the 1980s, and intimate photographs of lesbians living their everyday lives in the 1970s.
These stories give us more than a look into the past. They offer a chance to learn from the generations who came before us, honor the people whose work and lives helped move the community forward, and better understand the history we’re carrying with us today. This LGBTQ+ History Month, take some time to look back and celebrate the people who made it possible to look ahead.
Until next time.
