Cynthia Nixon held a gubernatorial campaign launch party at the historic Stonewall Inn on Wednesday night after announcing her run on Monday. The queer actor, best known for her role as Miranda in Sex and the City, is running for New York governor as a Democrat on a platform of funding public schools, affordable housing, and transportation reform.
In a quote written exclusively for OUT, Nixon said that "being visible and queer has been one of the great unexpected pleasures of [her] life."

"Right now we are at a critical moment in our journey as an LGBTQ community. We defeated DOMA and we have greater visibility and acceptance than ever before, but members of our community are still being targeted every single day," she said. "Now is the time to fight. In 2018, each one of us has to do whatever we can to take our government back. If the LGBTQ community wants change, we have to do what we have always done -- we have to go out ourselves and seize it."
And seize it she did. Nixon raised more funds in one day than Cuomo has in the past seven years.

Nixon also tweeted parts of her rousing, gender-inclusive speech at the Stonewall Inn, so if you missed it, read on!
““Good evening sisters, brothers, and those who reject the gender binary. Hello to all of the unqualified lesbians - and the qualified lesbians too! Good evening to the trans community! And to all of you New Yorkers who braved the snow and Cuomo’s subway to be with us tonight!””— Cynthia Nixon (@Cynthia Nixon) 1521675796
““ ‘The activists and organizers and ordinary New Yorkers who made Stonewall a household name knew that the single biggest question for our country has always been: “Does ‘We, the People’ include all of us?’ “”— Cynthia Nixon (@Cynthia Nixon) 1521675893
““When I announced yesterday that I’m running for gov, one of Cuomo’s top surrogates dismissed me as an “unqualified lesbian.” It’s true that I never received my certificate from the Department of Lesbian Affairs, though in my defense there’s a lot of paperwork required.” 🤷‍♀️”— Cynthia Nixon (@Cynthia Nixon) 1521676028
““We can’t just elect more democrats, we have to elect better, bluer Democrats.””— Cynthia Nixon (@Cynthia Nixon) 1521676089
