Gascón, who made history when she became the first out trans actor nominated for an Oscar, was at the center of this year's biggest Oscar scandal when hateful and bigoted social media posts she had shared over the years came back to the surface.

The actress has now offered a new apology, as seen in The Hollywood Reporter, where she opened up about what the last few months have been like. Gascón also discussed her willingness to "learn, listen, admit mistakes, apologize, and forgive others as I forgive myself for the unnecessary pain I have caused."

In her statement, Gascón said that she had "put on a shield" to protect herself, but that "shields can be cold and hard on the outside and can also hurt those around you."

"Lately, as I have been the target of harmful words, I have also said hurtful things throughout my life that have caused others to feel offended — things done and said from fear, from my own ignorance, from my own pain, from the outside of that cold, upsetting shield."

"With no excuse, and without any intention to justify any of my past actions, I apologize to all I have offended at any point in my life and throughout my journey. I humbly ask for their forgiveness and, to honor their kindness and understanding, I promise I will commit to continuing to learn and listen, so as not to make the same mistakes in the future."

Gascón also opened up about her mental health, noting that she's gone through "dark moments" throughout her life.

"Amid this unexpected, devastating storm, there are moments when the pain has been so overwhelming that I contemplated the unthinkable," the Emilia Pérez star said. "I harbored darker thoughts than those I considered in some of my previous, no less intimate and personal struggles."

"Fortunately, I have kept my one inch of sanity to see the light at the end of this tunnel of hate and understand that I must be and do better, and correct my past faults, without engaging in more darkness," she said.

Gascón came under fire when journalist Sarah Hagi found X posts (formerly tweets) from her espousing hateful and ignorant views on Islam and Muslims, immigrants, diversity at the Oscars, and George Floyd.

In her past apologies, Gascón has sounded defensive, telling CNN en Español: "I have not committed any crime nor have I harmed anyone," and "I am not racist nor am I anything that all these people have tried to make others believe I am."

Gascón also shared the statement on her Instagram (included above), with a summary in Spanish.
