Back for its 4th season, Ted Lasso is expanding its LGBTQ+ representation by focusing on the new women's team (the Lady Greyhounds) and continuing crucial queer plot points, such Colin Hughes' coming-out storyline.
Since season 1, the comedy series has received critical acclaim for focusing on uplifting, positive, and inclusive content that's brought vital escapism for audiences around the world.
The talented cast, which includes Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Juno Temple, and Jeremy Swift, is thrilled to portray a TV show that's setting the precedence for representation.
"It's a no-brainer! I don't think it should be a second thought. I think it should be a part of all things, really. I'm so proud to be part of a show that has embraced that for a while. I think it's such a beautiful community of people. We should be curious. We should be kind and we should include everybody in that," Temple tells Out.
Even though Ted Lasso checks off all of the boxes, Hollywood is heading down a downward slope in terms of queer visibility in major films and TV shows. The cast vehemently disagrees with the spiral in representation.
"Inclusivity has got to be the norm and it is becoming that. It's a last cry from some of these people who are trying to stop it. The same with all queer culture and everything. It should be integrated and we'd all be better for it," Swift says.
Fierce ally Hannah Waddingham also speculates that anyone who opposes queer storylines on-screen may have deeper issues beneath the surface.
"There should be no divide. Every person I have in my life or broadly know in the queer community are exceptionally good eggs and beautiful, creative people. I think the people that try and keep you guys down are the ones that are intimidated by that beauty," Waddingham says.
