"San Junipero," which starred Mackenzie Davis and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as two women who meet and fall in love in the digital world of San Junipero, is widely considered one of the best episodes in the series' history, winning two Emmys including Outstanding Television Movie.
Now, viewers may have their next queer Black Mirror obsession.
Nonbinary actor Emma Corrin and Issa Rae star in the new Black Mirror episode "Hotel Reverie," where Rae plays a superstar actor who falls in love with one of the characters (Corrin) in an immersive AI remake of a classic movie.
"Hollywood A-list actor Brandy Friday is thrown into an unusually immersive high-tech remake of a vintage romantic movie. She’s got to stick to the script if she ever wants to make it home," the official episode synopsis reads.
"She's brilliant," Corrin says of their co-star, per Elle UK. "Her comic timing is unreal. It's a love story at the heart, which I think is going to be surprising for people. It's not this big horror warning."
According to Elle UK, "the scenes between [Corrin] and Rae are infinitely watchable" and "their chemistry is so tender that it blunts the sense of dread that often accompanies a Black Mirror episode."
Rae said that she was reminded of her "favorite episode, 'San Junipero,' and 'Striking Vipers,'" but hopes "that people can look at them both separately but also appreciate them both as compliments to one another," per TV Insider.
Black Mirror season 7 is now streaming on Netflix.
