Lesbian boxer Nesthy Petecio just won her second Olympic medal!
Petecio, an Olympic boxer from the Philippines who went viral in 2021 for dedicating her medal to the queer community, fought in the semifinals in the women's boxing 57kg featherweight division, losing to Poland's Julia Szeremeta. Petecio and Esra Yildiz Kahraman, who lost in the other semifinal, have been awarded bronze medals.
Szeremeta will now face off against Lin Yu Ting of Taiwan for the gold medal.
Yu Ting is one of two boxers accused by discredited sports association the International Boxing Association (IBA) of failing an unspecified gender eligibility test in a tournament last year. The other is Imane Khelif of Algeria, who advanced in the women's 66kg division and will fight for the gold medal on Friday. The IBA has not produced evidence these two boxers failed tests, and neither has ever identified as trans or intersex.
At the Tokyo games in 2021, Petecio won the silver medal in the women's featherweight division and dedicated her victory to the LGBTQ+ community.
"I am proud to be part of the LGBTQ+ community," she said after losing the gold medal bout to Sena Irie of Japan. "Go forward, fight! This win is also for you."
Now, she's won again. Congratulations!
