1. Portrait of a Lady on Fire
This French drama takes place in the 18th century when a painter named Marianne is commissioned to paint a portrait of a noblewoman named Héloïse. As the two women get to know each other, they fall deeply in love, and begin to open up in ways they never could have imagined. Streaming on Hulu.

Love, Simon is a groundbreaking teen rom-com and coming-of-age movie about a closeted teen named Simon who starts anonymously emailing another closeted student at his school. Streaming on Hulu.
3. Fire Island
Joel Kim Booster wrote and stars in this gay adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice which follows a group of gay friends who go on a vacation to Fire Island where they have to deal with classism, racism, and romance. Also starring Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, Zane Phillips, Margaret Cho, and Matt Rogers. Streaming on Hulu.
4. Tell It To the Bees
This British romantic drama stars Anna Paquin and Holliday Grainger as two women who fall in love in 1950s rural Scotland. Streaming on Hulu.
5. Ammonite
This historical drama centers around the life of British paleontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) and a speculative romance she might’ve had with Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan). Streaming on Hulu.
6. Elena Undone
Elena Undone is about a mother and pastor’s wife who falls in love with a lesbian writer after they randomly meet — and keep meeting. Streaming on Hulu.
7. Dicks: The Musical
Not a typical "romantic" pick, but it was one of the best movies of 2023! This hilarious comedy stars Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, who also wrote it based on their off-Broadway musical, and follows two straight alpha males who meet and find out they’re identical twin brothers separated at birth. This over-the-top shock fest also stars Bowen Yang, Nathan Lane, Megan Thee Stallion, and Megan Mullally. Available to rent.
8. Desert Hearts
This classic '80s flick is based on the lesbian novel Desert of the Heart and is set in Reno, Nevada in 1959. It follows a 35-year-old English professor undergoing a divorce who meets and falls in love with a young female sculptor. Streaming on Max.
9. Bros
Billy Eichner’s 2022 romantic comedy stars him and Luke Macfarlane as two mismatched gay men in Manhattan who are drawn to each other. Featuring an all-LGBTQ+ principal cast, Bros is one of the first major gay rom-coms produced by a major studio. Streaming on Prime.
10. Professor Marston and the Wonder Women
Angela Robinson’s historical biopic centers on psychologist and comic book writer William Moulton Marston, who created the iconic Wonder Woman character. The movie, starring Luke Evans as Marston and Rebecca Hall and Bella Heathcote as his two polyamorous life partners, focuses on the beautiful romance between the three of them. Streaming on Prime.
11. The Handmaiden
Park Chan-wook’s dark erotic thriller The Handmaiden is also a terrific lesbian romance taking place in the early part of the 20th century in Japanese-occupied Korea. Streaming on Freevee.
12. The Carmilla Movie
This 2017 Canadian comedy horror film picks up five years after the end of the hugely popular web series of the same name. Both are adapted from the 1872 gothic novella Carmilla, a lesbian vampire tale. Streaming on Prime.
13. My Fake Boyfriend
Keiynan Lonsdale stars in this movie as a gay man who plans to make his ex jealous by pretending to have a new boyfriend, but his plan backfires when he meets a new person he falls for. Streaming on Prime.
14. Summer of 85
This French film takes place in the summer of 1985, when a teen boy is rescued from drowning by another teen boy. The two begin a whirlwind romance and learn about life and death. Streaming on Prime.
15. Red, White & Royal Blue
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, this movie follows Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez) as the bisexual son of the American President, and Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), a closeted member of the British Royal Family, as they reluctantly get to know each other and fall in love.
