Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp is trading in his typical underdog hero role for a much darker one.
Schnapp, who came out as gay in January, stars opposite Garrett Hedlund in the new thriller movie The Tutor, in which “an in-demand tutor is assigned to instruct a billionaire’s son from their New York waterfront estate. But what should be a straightforward job is complicated by the student's disturbing obsession with him, threatening to expose his darkest secrets.”
In the film, Hedlund plays a talented tutor named Ethan who takes a job working for a rich family offering $2500 a day to teach their son Jackson (Schnapp). Unfortunately, the job isn’t as easy as the tutor would’ve hoped, and Jackson is far from the star pupil he wanted.
At first, Jackson just seems strange, as any only child of a billionaire would be. But things quickly turn darker.
“The kid’s giving me… sort of a strange vibe,” Ethan says.
“They’re just kids, Ethan, they can’t help if they come from money, even if they’re a little messed up,” his wife, played by Victoria Justice retorts.
However, soon, no one can deny that Jackson is more than a little off. Jackson turns up at a restaurant where Ethan is on a date with his wife, knows things about Ethan’s life that he shouldn’t (like that his wife is pregnant), and gives nothing but threatening stares every time he’s on screen.
At one point, he even channels Marky Mark in Fear, beating himself up to give himself bruises so he can accuse his tutor of beating him and get him arrested. This is one intense ride!
The Tutor seems to be a huge departure for Schnapp, so we’re excited to see the young actor spread his wings.
The movie, also starring Victoria Justice, is written by Ryan King, directed by Jordan Ross, and comes out March 24 only in theaters.
