Conservatives are once again having a meltdown over something that has been part of the English language since at least 1375 (that's when the Oxford English Dictionary traces the use of 'singular they' to). The latest thing to trigger this pronoun outrage? He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
The first trailer for the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie was released today, and one throwaway joke is enraging conservatives. Masters of the Universe stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, who uses his magical sword to transform into the super-powered He-Man.
In the film, Adam has been hidden away in our world after Eternia was attacked. He's living a boring office job in the real world while searching for his sword so he can get back to the place he's from. In one scene, Adam is at his desk when a placard reading "Adam Glenn He/Him" appears.
The placard is clearly a playful nod to Adam turning into He-Man. Still, some conservatives are freaking out that the "woke mind virus" has taken over everything, including masculine heroes like He-Man.
Jon Del Arroz, a writer who says "I became a #1 bestselling author by standing for Christian values" in his X profile, was among the first to complain about Adam's pronouns.
"Now they're making a Masters of the Universe and giving He-man pronouns," Del Arroz writes. "These people won't stop until they ruin everything."
When commenters pointed out that He-Man also has pronouns in his name, Del Arroz doubled down, saying, "Their real agenda is to normalize it and make you accept it," and that the cast is "a diversity crew netflix cast with a strong female lead who is going to be so perfect and better than him at everything like usual."
Other conservatives have joined in, complaining that the "God dam [sic] woke mind virus is ruining everything."
You just fucked up my childhood memory," wrote one account. "He-Man is not a he/him.....you dumb f*ckers. He is a bad ass skeleton fighting son of a bitch that knows he is a man."
