Brokeback Mountain had its world premiere 20 years ago, in 2005, at the Venice International Film Festival, where director Ang Lee won the coveted Golden Lion for his work in this groundbreaking film.
Starring Heath Ledger (as Ennis Del Mar), Jake Gyllenhaal (as Jack Twist), Michelle Williams (as Alma Beers Del Marm), and Anne Hathaway (as Lureen Newsome Twist), this epic feature film tells the story of two men, Ennis and Jack, who are dispatched to work on the imposing Brokeback Mountain in the summer of 1963. Over time, Ennis and Jack fall in love and develop an ever-lasting relationship that both haunts and enchants them.
Following its critical acclaim in Venice, Brokeback Mountain went on to receive eight Academy Award nominations and win three of them: Best Director (Ang Lee), Best Original Score (Gustavo Santaolalla), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana).
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Brokeback Mountain, Focus Features is re-releasing the film in theaters nationwide. These new theatrical showings are scheduled to begin on June 22 and June 25.
