James Bond Producer 'Open' to Nonbinary Bond — Does It Mean Anything?

Could famous spy James Bond be nonbinary in their next film? It's possible, but don't hold your breath.

James Bond producer, and the woman who owns the rights to the character, Barbara Broccoli has tossed us gays a little scrap of potential representation while on the Girls on Film podcast with Anna Smith.

Throughout the podcast, Smith asked Broccoli questions about how the Bond franchise has grown alongside feminism. They spoke about representation for women in the series, and in the latest film No Time to Die, which is Daniel Craig's last film in the role. Smith also started asking about the future of the iconic role.

"Do you still think that Bond will always be a man?" she asked at one point.

"I do," Broccoli quickly replied, "because I don't think that we should be making films where women are playing men, I think we should be making more films about women and create female characters. So I think Bond will be a man"

When Smith followed that up by asking, "nonbinary perhaps one day?" Broccoli tossed her a bone. "Who knows," she replied, "I think it's open, you know? We just have to find the right actor."

So, what does this mean for queer Bond fans? Nothing. Broccoli's mind seems pretty set on Bond being a man. And while she said she's "open" to casting a nonbinary Bond, the statement doesn't really hold much weight, especially right after she emphasized twice that Bond is a man and will remain a man.
