Don't write off Our Lady J as just another trans singer. Often recognized at first for being Daniel Radcliffe's pal and only then for her otherworldly performances, this gal really knows how to sing, and to write, and to play the piano, all of which she does splendidly on this 8-track debut, "Picture of a Man."
The original, titular track is at once penetrating and ephemeral, while her innovative take on the Dolly Parton classic "I Will Always Love You" takes a familiar song into completely fresh territory. There's a gossamer quality throughout "Picture of a Man," but one that's anchored by deeply felt vocals and highly trained expertise. Need proof of that? Check out how she handles "Chopin Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2," one of the most beautiful and complex piano classics around.
And if this album is any indication, Our Lady J, easily dismissed as a flash in the pan, has the skills, talent, and determination to become a classic herself.
