Robert Hammond and Josh David share the gay history of the High Line
Maybe you remember the days of the Anvil? Or perhaps you were more of a Florent frequenter? Robert Hammond and Josh David, who co-founded Friends of the High Line, aren't trying to gloss over those heady days of yesteryear. In fact, tomorrow the duo will gather young and old(er) to discuss the gay history that many seem to have forgotten now that the Meatpacking District and Chelsea have become more gallery gloss than leather and lube.
In their discussion, "Behind the Bushes: The Secret Homo History of the High Line," they will share some playful stories--"of old Chelsea, legendary Roxy parties, and the adventures they had stumbling through the worlds of art, celebrity, government, design, and entertainment" as they set about transforming the High Line. Some of these were touched on in their book, which they will also sign copies of, but we're sure that those who gather will be welcomed to share some of their own tales. Oral histories are the best, after all.
The event takes place Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center in the West Village.
